The Health Risks Associated with Fluoride Use

When my children were little I had bought into the US stream of thinking I had to have fluoridated toothpaste for my children's teeth. No so much anymore. And it has irked me for a long time that as I read the ingredients – I'm seeing inklings of suspicious names that remind me of sugar included in some of the additives. REALLY??!!

In his book, Fluoride Deception, Christopher Bryson outlines the beginnings of water fluoridation with an industrial toxin.  He proposes that certain companies, faced with a tide of lawsuits related to death and injuries from toxic fluoride pollution caused by aluminum smelting, came up with the idea to convince the American public that fluoride was actually a good thing.

Fluoride has been added to our water supply for over 70 years, even though scientific studies have shown that American teens between the ages of 12 - 15 show visible signs of having been overexposed to it.  Shockingly, recent international studies have shown that even small doses of fluoride can lower the IQ of children!

“According to the CDC, 41% of American adolescents aged 12 - 15 have been overexposed to fluoride because you have this telltale sign of dental fluorosis, which in its mildest form is little white specs.  But when it gets more serious, it affects more of the surface of your teeth and it becomes colored: yellow, brown and orange mottling of the teeth.”

The initial scientific studies done to support the use of pharmaceutical-grade fluoride as a preventative against tooth decay were based on topical use of fluoride, not ingestion.  More current research is raising even further doubts of the benefits of topical fluoride treatments. Most of mainland Europe is not fluoridated, and yet, according to the WHO (World Health Organization) the teeth of Europeans are “just as good as, if not better than, Americans” where we fluoridate over 60% of our water supply.

We do know, however, that the ingestion of fluoride can lead to other negative health issues including:

Gastrointestinal problems
Kidney issues
Disrupted immune system functions
Chronic fatigue
Arthritic symptoms
Lowered thyroid function
Hyperactivity and/or lethargy

Both the CDC (Center for Disease Control) and the ADA (American Dental Association) have alerted its members to recommend to parents to not use fluoridated tap water when make infant formula.  The average glass of fluoridated water contains 250 times more fluoride than breast milk!

Despite the overwhelming evidence demonstrating that fluoride is not an effective strategy against tooth decay and that it may, in fact, cause significant health problems in many individuals, the practice of adding fluoride to our water supplies continues unabated.

What can we do:

Don’t drink fluoridated water.  Filter your tap water or purchase water which is not fluoridated. Choose a toothpaste which is unfluoridated.  By doing this, you will limit your exposure, and ingestion, of excessive amounts of fluoride.
